Traditionally, decks are built using hardwood. Wood decks typically use exotic hardwoods that are sourced from South America, where deforestation is an environmental concern. Unlike most hardwoods, which must grow for 50 years or more before they can be harvested, bamboo is a fast-growing grass that can be harvested every 5 to 7 years. Because of this rapid renewability, bamboo is one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable building products available.

All bamboo is carbonized, or heat treated before outdoor use, however, when bamboo is heat treated it becomes very brittle. dasso.XTR’s patented process eliminates this issue by applying a second heating stage. In the second heating stage, lignum, a natural binder in bamboo fiber, is melted and reset, returning the bamboo to its natural rigidity. That lignum provides more strength and gives all XTR boards a Janka hardness rating of 3,820 – a stronger and more durable board than most hardwood materials.
